Any work that affects an existing chimney - for example, if a solid fuel fireplace, flue liner or stove is to be installed - is considered building work. This then falls under building regulations, in particular the 150-page long 'Approved Document J' which is relevant to combustion appliances (and which we are very familiar with!).
In practice, this means that local council Building Control should be informed and they can then inspect the work on completion to sign it off. If this isn't done, your house may not be insured if you have a chimney fire. However, this can be bypassed if HETAS registered installers are used who can self-certify their own work. This saves you money, time and the worry of knowing if the job has been done correctly - not to mention an investment in your property's future value.
HETAS are the official body recognised by the government to approve solid fuel domestic heating appliances, fuels and services. They ensure that consumers can engage a properly trained and competent person (HETAS registered installer) to carry out installation and servicing. In addition, they independently test & confirm manufacturers' claims of appliance performance, efficiency and heat output.
Our installers are experts in their field and are conversant with the many complexities of installing stoves, open fires, gas appliances and just about any other type of fireplace.
Each stove installation is completed with a HETAS certificate and data plate. If you then move, your HETAS certifcation is a guarantee for your buyer that your stove or solid fuel appliance has been professionally fitted.
